Al Wilkinson
Registered Psychotherapist
Are you looking for change, but you're not sure where to start?
I work with people from all walks of life to identify what is causing distress, and how to remove obstacles to growth.
Whether you come with a specific issue, or a generalised sense that life could be better, I welcome your inquiry.
I offer both individual and couples' therapy from my consulting rooms in central Auckland and, by agreement, online.
Please, take a look around this site to learn more about my work or, if you feel the time is right, book a meeting with me now.
About psychotherapy
What to expect - working with me
First, we'll meet to discuss your goals. I'll ask some questions and you can do the same. It's a chance for you to check if I'm the right fit for you. If, for any reason, I think another therapist would be better suited for you, I will let you know.
Once we agree to work together, we'll find a regular weekly 50 minute slot, which I will set aside specifically for you.
Short term psychotherapy
If you have a specific goal or issue you want to work on, we may agree to a limited number of 6 to 8 sessions.
In those sessions we will remain focused on the issue at hand, considering it from different angles and working on practical strategies to help.
During the first few sessions, I will ask questions about what life is like for you now, and how it's been in the past. As our work progresses, I will ask you to bring whatever comes to mind. I will not, however, push you to discuss anything you're not ready to explore.
I will listen closely to get a sense of your experience. As the work deepens, with your permission, I will use "here and now" feedback to compassionately share emotional responses. This will unlock opportunities for you to see things from different perspectives and consider new ways of being in the world.
If, at the end of those sessions, you feel a desire to keep working together, we can talk about the next steps.
On-going psychotherapy
Longer term work gives clients the opportunity to achieve deeper understanding and acceptance of themselves by connecting past and present experiences in a supportive, compassionate environment.
The goal of all therapy is to relieve troubling symptoms of distress. Long term psychotherapy goes further to help clients develop self-acceptance and self-compassion.
